Iloilo City, first LGU to support the Peace Talks with the NDF

During the 8th Regular Session of the Iloilo City Council, the Council unanimously passed Resolution No. 2016-409, “A resolution expressing support to the ongoing Peace Negotiation between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDF)”.

Said resolution was the response of the City Council to the letter from Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) – Western Visayas asking for a resolution of support for the said peace negotiations held at Oslo, Norway last August 22-26, 2016.

In response to the said resolution, Ms. Concha Araneta Bucala, NDF Consultant, personally appeared in today’s session of the Council, September 13, 2016, to express the statement of gratitude of the National Democratic Front to the Iloilo City Council, who, according to Ms. Bucala, is the first LGU Council who officially expressed its support to the said peace talks.

Ms. Bucala further conveyed the appreciation of Mr. Luis G. Jalandoni, Chairperson, National Democratic Front of the Philippines, for the support. In his letter dated 12 September 2016 addressed to the Esteemed Members of the Iloilo City Council, Chairperson Jalandoni stated that the “highly valued resolution gives strong boost to our morale and also to many peace advocates in our country and abroad”.

The City Council, through this resolution, stated that the City of Iloilo adopts a common ground with Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) in the preservation of peace, harmony and equality in the Philippines and that there is a need to express this in writing so that same can be placed in the records of the City Council for reference purposes.

Resolution No. 2016-409 was enacted last September 6, 2016 and was authored by Councilor R Leone N. Gerochi, unanimously seconded by all Members present, with Hon. Jose S. Espinosa III, City Vice Mayor, as the Presiding Officer.
